September 17, 2012: One Interesting Thing - Picture Day!

Today was - depending on your point of view - either the highlight or the lowlight of the year for schoolkids, at least the ones in my daughter's school. Yes. It was picture day. My memory of the day when I was a kid was that we treated it as a pretty big thing, mostly because it got us out of the classroom for a while! Some boys (not many, though) would wear ties to school, but almost all the girls would dress up in something a little fancier than usual. We would troop down to the gymnasium and then a lot of time would be spent getting us lined up in some sort of order. The nightmare (in the lower grades especially) was that for some reason you'd end up being the boy stuck on the end of the row with all the girls! Then you'd be the butt of jokes forever! I don't think that fate ever fell on me, but just the possibility struck terror into my heart. Usually picture day didn't bother me much, but I remember one day in high school - probably my worst school picture ever. It had been raining all the way to school, I was soaking wet by the time I got there, and I was in a miserable mood - and it showed in my picture. I'm not a tough guy, but it might have been the one time that someone would have looked at a picture of me and become convinced that they weren't going to tangle with me! I don't know if all that drama still exists. I saw one boy in the schoolyard this morning wearing a tie. The rest looked pretty normally dressed. The girls, on the other hand, seemed a bit more dressed up than usual. Normal in other words. Guys do not want to dress up! Looking forward to seeing the results. Now - here's my Grade 6 class picture. I won't identify myself, except to say that I'm the really good looking one obviously!
